Soft rays, embedded in my flesh; more radiant than the finest diamonds and pearls; a gentle yet electrifying touch, and warmer than the open arms of  strangers; sunshine, you are all these things to me and more.

Brighter, I cannot smile when you are around.  You uplift my spirit, mind, body, and soul.  All these things you do to me, bringing me closer to ecstasy.

Sunshine… by far, is better than any food, drink, or drug.  After all, it is the only natural source of Vitamin D, which ironically has been coined “the sunshine vitamin”.  When sunlight hits the skin, ultra-violet B (UVB) rays in it’s natural form is used to make Vitamin D.

One cannot obtain their daily dose of Vitamin D solely from the sun, therefore, one must supplement their Vitamin D intake with food sources such as fish (mackerel, sardines, salmon, and tuna) and fortified foods such as milk, soy beverages, and margarine.

A deficiency in the “sunshine vitamin” has been linked to diseases such as fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, certain types of cancers, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis.  For these reasons, it is imperative that we maintain substantial levels of Vitamin D in our system.  This is one of our only safeguards of building and maintaining stonger bones and teeth. 

Know that you are doing yourself a world of good by delighting in a little of natures natural resource, however, be responsible… remember that direct exposure to sunlight over a period of time (sun burn and UV rays), may increase your chance of developing skin cancer.  All things including sunshine should be taken in moderation…, one should not be basking in the sun the entire day, every day.

Warmer and sunnier days are just ahead…. keep smiling… and do not be afraid to let the sunshine in!
